The UniSpacer is made by Centerpulse and is a 1-piece nonfixed cobalt-chrome device
to be inserted on the medial aspect of the medial knee, similar to previous Macintosh
and McKeever prostheses. It differs primarily in the fact that it has 6 sizes, attempting
to conform to the medial femur on the top, with the bottom being flat. It was developed
by an orthopedist, Dr. Rick Hallock, and Barry Fell, an engineer. As of this date,
3,250 total procedures have been performed. The first was performed in October 2000.
The company is training 40 orthopedists per month in this technique.
